Google Maps Alternatives
Google Maps is free because you are the product. Google logs everywhere you go and monetises it with ads and profiling. Europe builds the navigation apps that route you from A to B without harvesting your location history.
The Dutch mapping industry never went away: TomTom and HERE still supply the maps inside much of the car industry, and their consumer apps, TomTom GO and HERE WeGo, are polished, offline-capable navigators. Czechia's Mapy.com and Slovakia's Sygic are beloved regional favourites, and Germany's komoot owns outdoor, hiking and cycle routing.
For maximum privacy, Organic Maps and OsmAnd are open-source apps built on OpenStreetMap, the European-born, community-owned map of the world. They work fully offline with no tracking, as does the Netherlands' Magic Earth.

TomTom GO
Known for: The sat-nav pioneer, still running its own independent European map data with excellent offline maps and real-time traffic.
vs Google: decades of driving-navigation refinement on maps not dependent on Google's data or its tracking model.
OsmAnd
Known for: Fully offline, open-source OpenStreetMap navigation that's endlessly configurable — from cycling profiles to contour lines and custom overlays.
vs Google: total control and complete offline capability for power users, with no data collection whatsoever.
Organic Maps
Known for: Fast, lightweight, open-source offline maps with no ads, no tracking, and no accounts — ever.
vs Google: pure privacy and instant offline maps that don't drain battery or harvest your location.
komoot
Known for: The gold standard for hiking, cycling and gravel routing, built on community-tested trails and surface/elevation data.
vs Google: it plans routes by terrain, difficulty and trail quality — the off-road world Google Maps barely covers.
NuNav
Known for: Free, ad-free navigation app whose "Collaborative Routing" coordinates every user's route as a swarm, so drivers aren't all sent down the same detour. With live traffic, CarPlay and Android Auto.
vs Google: a genuinely different routing philosophy that optimises traffic collectively, ad-free and with EU-hosted data, instead of routing each driver in isolation.
Magic Earth
Known for: Privacy-first navigation on OpenStreetMap with live traffic and lane guidance — and literally zero tracking or account required.
