Oral-B belongs to Procter and Gamble in Cincinnati. Its biggest rival, Philips Sonicare, is Dutch. Europe offers a few more worth knowing: a Swiss brush dentists swear by, a French mouthpiece that cleans your teeth in twenty seconds, and a British upstart built for sustainability.

A short list of electric toothbrushes designed or owned in Europe, from the obvious swap to the delightfully different.

Philips Sonicare

Philips Sonicare Netherlands

Known for: The default European alternative to Oral-B. Sonic cleaning from Royal Philips of Amsterdam, in a range running from the entry 4000 Series to the app-connected DiamondClean. Heads stocked in every European chemist.

Curaprox

Curaprox Switzerland

Known for: Swiss gum-health specialist from Curaden of Kriens. Its Hydrosonic brushes use the same famously gentle, ultra-fine CUREN filaments as the cult CS 5460 manual brush, and the firm has trained over 120,000 dental professionals through its iTOP programme.

Jordan

Jordan Norway

Known for: Norway's toothbrush institution, in dental care since 1927 and the Scandinavian market leader in brushes, floss and dental sticks, owned by Oslo-based Orkla. The Clean Smile electric brush keeps things simple with two speeds and a pressure sensor, and Jordan's replacement heads fit most oscillating Oral-B handles for less.

Happybrush

Happybrush Germany

Known for: Munich brand covering both technologies: the Eco Vibe sonic range and the Eco R2 rotating brush, plus licensed kids' models. Recyclable and replaceable parts, with pricing that sits between the big names and the premium eco-brands.

Spotlight Oral Care

Spotlight Oral Care Ireland

Known for: Irish brand founded in 2016 by practising dentist sisters Dr Lisa and Dr Vanessa Creaven. The Sonic Electric Toothbrush is their bestseller, part of a clinically led range that is PETA-approved, vegan-friendly and free of triclosan and SLS.

SURI

SURI United Kingdom

Known for: London eco-brand with a repairable aluminium sonic brush, plant-based cornstarch heads and a genuine head-recycling scheme. The sustainability pick.

FOREO

FOREO Sweden

Known for: Stockholm-founded design house behind the ISSA range, a sonic hybrid brush with silicone and PBT polymer bristles that looks more like a bathroom design object than a medical device.

Y-Brush

Y-Brush France

Known for: Lyon-made U-shaped sonic mouthpiece that brushes all your teeth at once in about 20 seconds. Made in France and a CES Innovation Award winner.

Emmi-dent

Emmi-dent Germany

Known for: The technological outlier. Emmi Ultrasonic of Mörfelden-Walldorf, founded in 2005 by engineer Bülent Emekci, cleans with patented miniaturised ultrasound chips and no scrubbing motion at all. Made in Germany.

Boombrush

Boombrush Netherlands

Known for: Rotterdam's "last toothbrush ever", a sonic brush with a battery that lasts up to a year on one charge, a lifetime warranty and a free head-recycling scheme. B Corp certified, founded in 2019, sold direct with a subscription for heads and toothpaste.
