Port (Porto) PDO is the fortified wine of Portugal's Douro Valley — the world's oldest demarcated wine region, mapped out in 1756. Grapes grown on the Douro's terraced schist are fortified with grape spirit and aged in the lodges of Vila Nova de Gaia into tawny, ruby and vintage styles.
The imitation is any fortified wine labelled ‘port-style’ from outside the Douro. Only wine from that valley may be called Port.
