The name is Basque for Newfoundland, where Basque whalers sailed in the 16th century. Himalayan climbers Alberto Iñurrategi and Juanito Oiarzabal made the brand known. The Lasa family controlled Ternua Group from 2009. The group filed for insolvency in June 2025 after the outdoor market slump. In October 2025 Dikar, a cooperative in the Mondragon Corporation, bought the Ternua brand for €1.5 million and kept 56 staff. So Ternua is now cooperative owned, and it stays in Arrasate.
