Josef Liebhart founded Salewa as a saddlery, hence the name: Sattler, Leder, Waren. The brand made the first fully adjustable crampon and the tubular ice screw in 1960. The Oberrauch family's Oberalp group distributed Salewa in Italy from 1982 and bought it in 1990. Oberalp acquired the Droker boot factory in Romania in 2022. Fair Wear leader status since 2016. Oberalp was caught up in South Tyrol's 2020 face-mask procurement affair and is still in court over it.
