Fernand Petzl was a caver near Grenoble who built rope ascenders in 1968 and the first mountaineering headlamp in 1973. The company was formally founded in 1975 in Crolles. His son Paul Petzl has been president since 2003. The family owns everything, with no outside investors. Petzl bought ice-axe maker Charlet Moser in 2000 and runs a foundation since 2006. Around 1,000 employees, about half of them in France. Two harness recalls, in 2024 and 2026, are worth knowing about.
