Jørgen Jørgensen founded Norrøna in 1929. His great-grandson, also Jørgen Jørgensen, has run it since 2005. The family owns it fully. Norrøna claims to have been the first to bring Gore-Tex to Europe. The Kaunas factory opened in 2020 to make fleece and wool layers from European fabrics. Norrøna is a Fair Wear member and repairs more than 20,000 items a year. Turnover was NOK 765 million in 2024 with 116 employees.
