Sea captain Helly Juell Hansen and his wife started with oiled linen waterproofs. The brand made survival suits for the North Sea oil industry in the 1970s. Ownership has passed through Orkla, Investcorp, Altor and Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan. Canadian Tire bought Helly Hansen in 2018 for CAD 985 million. In May 2025 the US group Kontoor Brands, owner of Wrangler and Lee, took over. Kontoor wants sales above USD 1.1 billion by 2030. Norwegian heritage, American owner.
