Åke Nordin sewed his first backpack as a teenager and founded the company in 1960. Fjällräven listed in Stockholm in 1983. Since 2014 it sits in Fenix Outdoor International, domiciled in Switzerland and listed in Stockholm, with the Nordin family holding most of the votes. Fenix also owns Hanwag, Primus, Tierra and now Devold. In 2025 Fenix bought into a Bulgarian apparel factory to move some production closer to Europe. The USA is now the largest market.
