Bergan was a bicycle mechanic from Tønsberg who held 45 patents. Bergans packs became standard issue for the Norwegian armed forces in 1913. The original factory closed in 1982 and production moved to Asia in 1991. After years of losses, Sport Holding, Norway's largest sports retail group owned by investors Bjørn Rune Gjelsten and Olav Nils Sunde, bought Bergans in 2021. Bergans has sourced from Myanmar since 2013 and chose to stay after the coup.
