Galliano Bordin came from a shoemaking family and ran the ski boot brand Dinsport before creating AKU. The name comes from a benevolent spirit in Easter Island legend, picked up from a Thor Heyerdahl book. His son Paolo Bordin runs the company today and the family still owns it. The Canadian Cook family, owners of Kamik, hold a minority stake and distribute AKU in North America. AKU opened its Romanian plant in Cluj-Napoca, moved part of production back to Italy around 2010, and added two Serbian factories in 2018 and 2022. Revenue was around €29 million in 2022 with about 570 employees across all plants. AKU publishes a carbon footprint for every model
