L’Oréal

France France

L'Oréal, based in Clichy outside Paris, is the world's largest cosmetics group with 37 brands from Garnier and Maybelline to Lancôme, Kiehl's and La Roche-Posay. The Bettencourt Meyers family and Nestlé are the main shareholders.

Its L'Oréal for the Future programme runs to 2030. By the end of 2024, 97% of operated sites ran on renewable energy and Europe reached 100%, so the 2025 site target was met. The problem sits outside the factories: supply-chain (scope 3) emissions have risen since 2019, and that is most of the footprint. In Russia the group closed its own boutiques and stopped advertising in 2022, but continues to sell through retailers.

Our verdict: mixed. Best-in-class on operations, unfinished on the supply chain, and a Russia stance that stops short of leaving.
