Chanel is privately owned by the Wertheimer family and reports less than a listed company, but its climate plan is one of the clearer ones in luxury. Mission 1.5°, launched in 2020, commits the house to halving its own emissions by 2030 and reaching net zero across the value chain by 2040. The targets are validated by the Science Based Targets initiative.

Fragrance and beauty are made in France, at sites in Pantin and Compiègne, and the house owns its jasmine and rose fields in Grasse. Packaging is being redesigned to cut weight and use refills, starting with skincare. Chanel suspended its operations in Russia in March 2022 and has not returned.

Our verdict: strong. Dated targets, production at home, and a clean exit from Russia. The gap is transparency, since a private company shows less of its data.
