Proton VPN is part of the Swiss Proton stack that includes Proton Mail, Drive and Calendar, and since 2024 the group has been overseen by the non-profit Proton Foundation rather than outside shareholders.

Its free tier is unusual in placing no limit on data, and if you already pay for Proton Unlimited the VPN is included at no extra cost.
