Krita is a free, open-source raster editor built specifically for digital painting and illustration, making it a strong alternative to Adobe Photoshop for artists rather than photographers. It runs natively on Linux, Windows and macOS.
It is widely praised for its rich brush engine, stability and artist-focused workflow, and being open source it costs nothing (donations support development). It is excellent for concept art, comics and illustration, though it is not designed for photo retouching.
