European Travel Helpers: Explore Closer to Home
A night train out of Vienna, a FlixBus across three borders, a cabin in the Danish dunes booked through Landfolk. You can cross the continent, sleep somewhere lovely and never touch a US booking giant or a short-haul flight.
These are the European travel platforms we actually use:
Interrail
Known for: The ultimate budget-friendly rail adventure. The Interrail Pass allows young travelers to explore 33 European countries with unlimited train travel for a fixed price. It’s one of the best ways for students to see a lot of Europe without breaking the bank.
Omio
Based in: Germany (Berlin)
Known for: comparing and booking trains, buses, flights and ferries across 47 countries — Europe plus the United States, Canada, Brazil, Southeast Asia and Japan — genuinely useful for the cross-border trips no single national operator covers.
FlixBus
Known for: Europe’s largest budget-friendly bus network. FlixBus offers affordable, eco-conscious travel to thousands of destinations. With comfortable seating and free Wi-Fi, it’s a great alternative to trains for budget travelers and students.
Donkey Republic
Known for: Copenhagen-based, bike-share platform across ~70 European cities — Denmark, Germany, Belgium, Netherlands, UK, Spain, Switzerland, Iceland. Mix of station-based and free-floating models. Less hyped than the scooter operators, but in cities where bikes work better than scooters (Copenhagen, Amsterdam, Bruges), Donkey is usually the operator behind the rentals.
Hostelworld
Known for: The budget traveler’s best friend. Hostelworld connects backpackers and students with the best hostel stays across Europe. From social dorms to private rooms, it’s a perfect option for those looking for affordability and community.

Citymapper
Known for: the best-in-class urban transit app. Citymapper combines metro, bus, tram, bike-share, scooters and walking into one journey planner that locals actually swear by — covering most major European cities from Lisbon to Istanbul. Born in London in 2011, though now owned by US transit-tech firm Via.
Rome2Rio (Australia)
Known for: Multi-modal door-to-door journey planning — you enter any two locations and it shows how to get there by combining trains, buses, flights, ferries, and driving, with estimated prices and durations. It's the go-to tool for figuring out how to get from A to B when you don't know what transport options exist. Owned by Omio since 2019
