Support European Electric Cars
David B.
Where your car comes from matters. European brands like VW, BMW, Stellantis, and Renault support millions of jobs across the continent — in factories, supply chains, and dealerships. With growing concerns about Chinese EV imports, data privacy, and surveillance risks, choosing European has never made more sense.
Tesla in Europe: A Mixed Picture
Tesla's ride in Europe has had real ups and downs — sales swings, a politically divisive brand image, and production headaches at the Berlin Gigafactory. Still, the factory supports over 12,000 European jobs, and with several countries now approving self-driving cars on public roads, the competitive landscape is shifting fast. Looking for alternatives? The BMW iX, VW ID.4, Peugeot e-308, or Hyundai IONIQ 6 offer comparable range and tech.
The Problem With Chinese EVs
BYD, MG, and Xpeng are flooding the European market with cheap, subsidised imports — but they create virtually no local jobs. Worse, Chinese automakers are legally required to share data with Chinese state intelligence. That means your car's GPS, cameras, and driving history could be accessible to Beijing. The EU has launched anti-subsidy investigations for exactly this reason.
Note: Polestar is fully owned by China's Geely. MG is owned by Chinese state-backed SAIC — not British, despite the badge.
What to Look for in an EV
Buying a car is a major financial decision. Three things matter beyond the spec sheet:
✔️ Parts availability — will you still get support in 10 years if a brand pulls out of Europe?
✔️ Data privacy — European brands store data under GDPR. Chinese-owned brands operate under Chinese surveillance law, with no user transparency.
✔️ Economic impact — money spent on European EVs stays in Europe.
No brand is perfect, but the risks vary enormously. This guide helps you choose wisely.
