MSF operates in around 70 countries with some 70,000 staff, delivering frontline trauma surgery and epidemic response where almost no one else will — Aleppo, Yemen, Gaza, Sudan and Ukraine, plus the Ebola outbreak in West Africa (2014) and Mpox in the DRC (2024). It was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1999.

Roughly 97% of its funding comes from private donors; MSF refuses most government money to preserve its operational independence, which is the structural reason it can speak honestly about conditions on the ground even when governments fund the perpetrator.
