Bellingcat runs global open-source investigations with around 25 full-time staff plus a large volunteer network, funded by foundations (Open Society, Sigrid Rausing Trust, Adessium), investigation workshops and individual donors.
Its landmark investigations include the identification of the Russian Buk launcher behind MH17 (2014), the Skripal/Salisbury GRU operatives (2018), the Navalny poisoning (2020) and the Bucha war-crimes documentation (2022). The open-source method it developed has since spread to almost every serious investigative outlet.
