# Wero

> <p><strong>Known for:</strong> The consumer brand of the European Payments Initiative (EPI), backed by major eurozone banks. Over 53 million registered users in Germany, France, Belgium and the Netherlands. Started with P2P, now live for online checkout in Germany (since November 2025) and France and Belgium (since January 2026), with Lidl, Rossmann, Decathlon, Air France, E.Leclerc and Orange on board. EPI was formed in 2020 by a group of European banks to build a payment system owned and run from Europe. Wero launched in 2024 on SEPA Instant rails, so the money moves bank to bank with no card network in between. The Dutch iDEAL scheme is migrating into Wero, which means Wero inherits an entire country's online payment habit. In February 2026 EPI signed the memorandum with the EuroPA schemes that links Wero to the rest of the continent.
