Bayer is a German company headquartered in Leverkusen, with a pharmaceutical business focused on cardiology, oncology, women's health and ophthalmology, and blockbuster drugs including the blood thinner Xarelto and the eye treatment Eylea. Bayer also invented Aspirin more than a century ago.

The company has been cutting around 12,000 jobs under a restructuring led by chief executive Bill Anderson, while facing biosimilar competition and patent expirations.
