# The Ocean Cleanup

> The Ocean Cleanup is the Dutch ocean-engineering nonprofit pursuing the largest plastic-cleanup operation ever attempted, from the Pacific to the world's rivers.

The Ocean Cleanup

The Ocean Cleanup is a Dutch foundation (Stichting) founded by Boyan Slat, based in Rotterdam since 2013 and funded by private donors and corporate partnerships (Coldplay, Maersk, KIA, Airbnb). It develops plastic-removal technology for both oceans and rivers.

Its System 03 deployment in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch has removed over 20 million kg of plastic, while its Interceptor machines stop new plastic at river mouths across Indonesia, Malaysia, the Dominican Republic, the US, Vietnam, Jamaica and Thailand — addressing the source as well as the symptom.
